prototype sign up!

Hi guys,

I just put up a prototype active sign -- it isn't very exciting right now, 
as only the text half of the sign is up, but when I add the graphical 
half (on Monday or Tuesday) things should be a bit more interesting.

In the meantime, there are some changes for robustness that I need to make 
(have the java program start on boot, make it harder to monkey with the 
machine), so please be gentle with my sign.  I'll be gone for the weekend, 
and will be pleasantly surprised if nothing goes wrong by Sunday.
