Troubleshooting
This page is intended to contain a list of solutions to common
problems. It is just beginning, so if you encounter any problems
please tell us about them by sending us mail via the "Mail Authors"
link. This software was originally written for use with Mosaic
version 2.2. It should be fully compatible with later versions and
with other browsers, but if you find any problems please let us
know.
The Maple icon appears and then disappears immediately
- Check to make sure you have compiled binaries of mainserver,
scm_cli, and map_cli in your surfaces directory. Try running scm_cli
to see if it gives any error messages. If it does, it is not compiled
correctly -- check to make sure you set everything correctly when
compiling.
No surface appears when you click OK
- Deiconify the Maple application. If there is a prompt (a ">"
symbol) there, Maple is not receiving the data. Did you rename the
.mapleinit file and forget to change it back? Since Maple can't
receive data, you will have to quit from the application menu rather
than from within Mosaic.
When you click OK, Mosaic asks you for the name of the binary
file on local disk.
- Check to make sure your .mailcap file is correctly placed in your
home directory. Remember that anytime you create or change the
.mailcap file you must restart Mosaic.
If you are having problems with the local socket code (the code you
downloaded onto your machine via our ftp server), you can run view the
surfaces without it. It will require you to manually load the data
files into Maple. We strongly try to recommend that you try to get
the socket code working before resorting to this option. Here's what
you'd do:
- Make sure you get rid of all the code you ftp'ed from our server.
This method will not work if you still have the .mailcap file or
.mapleinit file.
- Start Maple from OUTSIDE Mosaic by typing xmaple or whatever your
system's command is at your prompt.
- Use the crystallography program as you normally would. When you
click OK to view a surface, Mosaic will ask you for the name for the
binary file on the local disk. Give the file a name (it will be
written to your account).
- Go to the Maple window and choose Include from the File Menu.
Give the file name that you just gave Mosaic, and press Return.
- You should see some text appear in the Maple window. Press
Return, and the surface should appear on your screen.
- Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each surface you wish to view.
- When you are finished, choose Exit from the Maple File Menu. The
"Quit Maple" link inside Mosaic will not work.
