The official name of the group is the "MIT Project on Mathematics and Computation". The group's nickname "Switzerland" dates from the time when Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. At that time, the group maintained administrative links with both labs, and served as a "neutral territory" between them.
The use of the term "Switzerland" and the appearance of the Swiss coat of arms on our web pages is not meant to imply that there is any endorsement of our activities by the Swiss Confederation.
