Dr. George Metakides is Director of Research and Development in Information Technologies (ESPRIT - The European Strategic Program for Research and Development in Information Technologies) for the European Union, and a central figure in the formulation of Europe's information technology strategy. From 1988 to 1993, he headed the Department of Basic Research and Scientific Relations in Information Technologies in the Directorate General XIII of the Council of the European Commission. He was responsible for planning and policy for the Framework Program for R&D, 1994-1998, in Information Technologies. At various times during 1984-1987, he has held the positions of president of the Research Group of the Council of the EC, and member of the ESPRIT Management Committee and the NATO Science Committee.

Dr. Metakides was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1945. He received his MS degree in Electrical Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mathematical Logic from Cornell University in 1971. He pursued an academic career in the United States at Rochester University, Cornell, and MIT until 1978 when he returned to Greece to take the Chair of Logic at the University of Patras, Greece. He has over 50 published articles and books in the areas of Mathematical Logic, Computer Science and Science Policy.
