In China, Internet developed very rapidly in 1995. The APNIC database indicates that there are more than 190 networks registered under the country code CN; among them, 19 are self-defined as Internet service providers. Currently, there are 6 international links connecting different networks in China to the global Internet.

The major events in 1995 were:

China Education and Research Network (CERNET) finished its first phase of implementation. CERNET is the first nationwide education and research computer network in China. The CERNET project is funded by the Chinese government and directly managed by the Chinese State Education Commission. CERNET has a 3-layer structure, i.e., a nationwide backbone, 8 regional networks and hundreds of campus networks. Currently, there are more than 100 universities connected to CERNET from all provinces except Tibet. It is expected that by the year of 2000, most universities and a lot of high schools and elementary schools will be connected to CERNET. For more information, see www.cernet.edu.cn,.

ChinaNet is a commercial Internet set up and managed by China Ministry of Post and Telecommunication. Currently, there are two nodes in Beijing and Shanghai. ChinaNet is going to expand its services and is expected to build a 31-node nation-wide backbone network by June 1996. For more information, see www.bta.net.cn.

China Academic Science Network (CASNET) operates the National Computation Facilities of China (NCFC) Network. CASNET is going to link its 100+ research institutes in different cities in China by early 1996. For more information, see www.cnc.ac.cn.

The Ministry of Electronics is also installing its Internet service in China.

Recently, the Chinese government has announced its policy concerning global Internet connection. The basic concept is to strengthen management, promote what is beneficial and get rid of what is harmful, and the overall goal is to promote healthy Internet development in China.

China is a country with the biggest population in the world. The Internet service is playing a more and more important role in China. There is no doubt that China's Internet will become a very significant component of the global Internet community.
