There's still life in Boston after 1am Believe it or not, the city of Boston does not shut down for the evening at 1am. A few clubs and cafes manage to keep their doors open and the cappuccino makers brewing until 2am and beyond. A few places to get a bite late at night: * You can get espresso and calzones until 4am at the Cafe Pompeii in the North End. Late at night, after the bars close, people cluster at the entrance on Hanover street waiting to get a table. Sometimes they wait a long time while the patrons inside leisurely enjoy the espresso. A mixed crowd frequents this cafe; its location and late hours make it a magnet for the Italian locals as well as the young trendy crowd. You can get gelati, large calzones, pizza slices and subs, as well as pastries and coffee at the Cafe Pompeii. * For a less trendy selection of food and beverages, The Tasty in Harvard Square serves burgers, sandwiches, bagels, soda, and other standard delicatessen fare. You can get service 24 hours a day (except Sundays; they close at 4:30am and reopen about 9am Monday). Though a bit cramped, The Tasty is a landmark diner. * Tommy's Lunch, on Mt. Auburn Street in Harvard Square, is open until 2am on weekdays, and 3am on weekends. They serve traditional diner fare, including hamburgers, milkshakes and frappes, salads, french fries and coffee. * Hong Kong Restaurant is a combination bar and Chinese food restaurant in an ugly pink building just south of Harvard Square. It is open until 1:30am during the week, and 2am on Friday and Saturday nights. Hong Kong is closed Mondays. * Border Cafe, Harvard Square's hopping Tex-Mex restaurant and bar will stay open fairly late, but it depends on the crowd. It is usually open until 1:30am on the weekends. Expect a long wait for dinner on the weekends, because the place gets jam-packed with yuppies and college students. The menu offers both Mexican and Cajun food, and some dishes are a combination of both. * Beyond Harvard Square, there are a few places in Central Square open into the early morning hours. Hi-Fi's is the well-known Cambridge hangout for pizza and subs, open until 3am on weekdays, 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. * Just down Massachusetts Avenue toward MIT lies the Middle East Cafe. It houses a restaurant in the front, with an 18-and-up night club to the rear. It is open until 2am on weekends and 1am weekdays. Traditional Middle Eastern and Lebanese food is served in the restaurant. Cover charges range from $5-$7 for the shows, which are always live. Each night features from one to four bands, depending on the theme of the night. Monday is jazz music; Tuesday and Thursday nights are rock music; Wednesday is a mix -- the type of music changes weekly; Friday night is Greek music, and Saturday night features Arabic music. * One not-to-be-forgotten stop for a late-night snack is Buzzy's, next to the Longfellow bridge in Boston. Famous for their roast beef sandwiches, Buzzy's serves fast food until 5am every day. The International House of Pancakes has nine -- yes NINE! -- locations in the Greater Boston Area. The IHOPs in Brighton and Brookline are open 24 hours a day; the others are only open until 9pm. From a menu of classic diner fare, you can get pancakes and omelettes any time of day, as well as burgers, sandwiches, coffee and dessert. Other late night eateries include the following: * The Stage Deli -- On Tremont Street across from the Wang Center, this is more than just a delicatessen! The menu include steak, hamburgers, bagels, eggs and desserts in addition to deli sandwiches. The deli has a full bar, and is open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. * Division Sixteen -- The kitchen at Division Sixteen cooks up burgers, appetizers, grilled and Mexican food, omelettes, steaks and desserts until 1:30am every day. Located at 955 Boylston Street, the bar serves until 1:55am. * Deli Haus -- This traditional delicatessen is located on Commonwealth Avenue in Kenmore Square. The Haus serves deli, some German food and other types of food; they also serve beer and wine. It is open until 2am Sunday -- Thursday, and until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. * Many restaurants in Chinatown are open until 2am or 3am. Chances are, if you go there, you'll find a place that will serve quite late. One in particular is The Lucky Dragon, on Beach Street. Open until 3:30am every day, The Lucky Dragon serves primarily Cantonese food. Chau Chow Restaurant on Beach Street is open until 1:45am during the week, and 3:45am on the weekends. * 33 Dunster Street -- Located in Harvard Square, this collegiate restaurant has a menu of burgers, salads and sandwiches, as well as beer and wine. It is open until 2am on the weekends, 1am during the week. Several night clubs in Boston are open until 2am, if you want a longer evening that starts early. * The Hub Club at 533 Washington Street in Boston (take the Red Line to Downtown Crossing) is an over-21 dance club. Open until 2am Wednesday through Saturday, the Hub provides a different theme and different music each night. Wednesday night is "Explosion," a night for the progressive crowd, featuring "House" music, go-go dancers, and the Sister Dimension dee-jay. The After Work Jazz Series, from 5:30 to 9:30pm on Thursdays, kicks off a night of jazz and rhythm and blues music. There is a free buffet from 6 to 7pm Thursdays. Friday night is International night at the Hub Club, when the dee-jay plays the latest in international and American dance music, and a band plays on the first floor. Saturday night is the KISS-108 party with a dee-jay. * The Citi club, at 15 Landsdowne street in Boston, has concerts during the week. Wednesday night is the "House Party;" Thursday night is International Night; Fridays and Saturdays feature progressive and Top-40 dance music from a dee-jay. Citi is open until 2am to the over-21 crowd. * The Kenmore Club in Kenmore Square houses three different clubs in one building -- Narcissus, Celebration, and Slapstick. Open until 2am every night, the clubs usually play dance music for people 18 and older.
