Project Overview:

Project VIEW is a research initiative currently underway at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). A group of MIT students, supported by iCampus and an advisory board of MIT professors and administrators, proposed to utilize the ever growing electronic resources available in order to create a new means of mass communication among members of the MIT community.

Description:

View researchers are developing a visual information system that allows for easy posting, organization, viewing, and reaction to the vast amounts of information to be communicated on campus. It will consist of large, electronically controlled boards placed in public areas. The system's purpose is to organize and provide images and documents to viewers and solicit responses from the large group of individuals that make up a campus or small geographic community. Accordingly, the primary users of this project will be student groups, administrators, professors and the general student body

Unlike a conventional bulletin board, the VIEW board will permit users to write back to a posting, respond to it, email the information to their own address, or write directly to the author. This can all happen directly on the board, using the VIEW board as a direct input device in addition to its display capacities. By reducing the barriers to expressing one's thoughts and creations, Project VIEW hopes to foster and further enhance the intellectual environment at MIT.
