careful with step-down transformers! there are two
kinds - one for "simple stuff" like water heaters,
hair driers, and such. these put out 110V, but
very spiky voltage. don't use these for electronic
equipment. i trashed my power supply for my zip-drive
using one of these here in germany. it worked for
a day and a half, and died just before i could
copy my thesis to my hard drive.
luckily only the power supply died - the drive
works with the new, german power supply. now i have
two zip drives and only one power supply. i'm just
glad that i have a parallel and a scsi now - even more
universally universal!
also note that most step-down transformers that i saw
in the states have european-style prongs, but
sockets in europe are also recessed, so that you
need an additional plug-converter. and if you want to
keep the two transformers from overheating each
other, it may be wise to put another plugadapter
between them. makes for nice plug-towers and very
unreliable electrical connections considering the
quality of most of the plug-adapters...
