Actually, using APM to blank the screen was only ever experimental
and seems to fail on many more machines than it works on.  I suggest
that unless it works well for you (and I have't heard of anyone who
has it interacting well with X) then disable it in the kernel.

[Unless, of course, someone want to figure out why starting the X
server causes the screen saver to go off ... ]
