User study

User study information

We are looking for people who are up to the challenge of training with robots inside a video-game like simulation environment! We are testing how someone’s mental model evolves when working together with a high-end state-of-the-art virtual robot. The experiment will be short and fun! The experiment takes only about 15 minutes, and one participant selected by lottery will win a $100 gift certificate to Best Buy! You can do the user study any day until May 25th.

There are two ways to participate in the user study:

  • Windows OS users: You will receive a link for the software program that you will download and run to execute the study. The program will remotely connect to our server. Currently, the server supports only one-to-one connection, so you will need to schedule a time that you will run the program. To run the program, you will need to have JAVA installed.
  • Other OS users: We will need to schedule a good time that you can come to the lab and run the study from one of our PCs, if you are close!

To schedule a time, add your name in the following link:

interactive-robotics.lattiss.com

Then, we will contact you and assign you to a user study group. There are two groups for this user study.

User study FAQ

The program crashes!

First, verify that you are trying to run the program on your scheduled time (that’s when our server will be running), you are connected to the Internet and you have JAVA installed.   You can download JAVA from: http://www.java.com/en/ .Then, check the command prompt window that appears when you click on the “Run” file. If the message “java not recognized as internal … ” appears, and you still have JAVA installed, then you need to update the environment variable PATH of your system with the java directory, for example: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin”. To check if the PATH is set correctly open the command-prompt and click “java -version”. The version of the JAVA you have installed should appear. Please contact us if you face any problems!

Where is the lab?

Our Lab is in Building 31 (the building is also called Gas Turbine Lab). The best way is to come outside the building and give us a call, and we will let you in. If you have signed up, we will send you a number to call through email. Otherwise, you can get into the main entrance, open the door (locked after 16:00), walk straight passing some turbines on your right, until you see some stairs going upwards, about in the middle of the corridor. Take the stairs, and then we are the first lab that you will come across.
