Hiring UROPs
To post UROP project openings Please feel free to submit your UROP project opening to the UROP Office and to John Merriman (
merriman@csail.mit.edu) for posting on the UROP and CSAIL website, respectively.
To expedite the posting process, please include the following.:
* A brief project description (no more than 250 words)
* Prerequisites or requirements for the position
* The name of your department/lab/center
* The name of the MIT UROP Faculty Supervisor
* Contact information; including email address and url/s (if applicable)
Once you have found a student All UROP students are required to complete some basic paperwork. Once you have found a UROP student to research on your project, the student must submit the following items to John Merriman in 32-G425A for review and approval, she will deliver to the UROP office:
* A student authored 1-2 page typed research proposal, which describes the work they plan to conduct. NOTE: the UROP office does not accept group proposals from students researching the same topic or working as a team; each student is required to submit an individual proposal that outlines the overall project and provides specific information on his/her individual role within the project, as well as his/her goals for the semester.
* Research proposals must be aubmitted online by the student here:
sisapp.mit.edu/uropweb/home.mit. Then must be approved by the PI here:
sisapp.mit.edu/uropweb/facultyHome.mit. By signing the UROP coversheet, you, as the supervisor, are confirming your support of the academic content of the proposal and are acknowledging your understanding that no UROP student is allowed to begin work in the lab until all departmental and Institute chemical hygiene and/or safety requirements have been fulfilled.
Paying a UROP While UROPs receiving direct funding from the UROP office are paid at $9.00/hr (see below for update), Research funded UROPs have more flexibility, as long as they are at 9.00/hr or above. Please see the chart below for ranges used in CSAIL based on academic year. UROPs cannot work for more than 20 hours during the Fall and Spring Semesters. They cannot work for more than 40 hours during IAP and Summer Sessions. The semesters are broken down as follows: (IAP/Spring) (Spring) (Summer) (Fall) (Fall/IAP) (IAP). A student must submit a coversheet for each semester worked.

Beginning this Fall, New UROP Direct Fund Rate "Beginning this fall, the UROP hourly rate will increase to $9.25. For students awarded direct funding from UROP, stipends will rise to $1,300 (fall and spring) and $4,400 (summer).
Faculty supervisors using sponsored research funds to support UROPers must pay an hourly wage of at least $9.25. Note: Institute overhead is charged for all student wages supported on sponsored research accounts.
This summer, the UROP minimum wage remains $9.00 per hour, through August 31." - The UROP office in an email dated 6/5/08
Deadlines The UROP office is very strict on all deadlines. They will not accept proposals submitted online after 5:00 PM on the deadline date unless under extraneous circumstances.
