Obtaining an MIT ID Card

From the MIT Card Office 8/15/08:

In order to receive an MIT ID, an individual must present a valid passport, or a US government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license. Driver’s licenses from foreign countries, college/university IDs from other institutions like Harvard or Wellesley, credit/bank cards, or insurance cards will not be accepted as proof of ID.

Also, name changes must be initiated through HR or the Registrar’s office. Once they have made the change the individual may come to the Card Office for a new card. However, they will have to present an ID (as mentioned above) with the preferred name. Otherwise, we are unable to issue the card with the “new” name.

All international students must go through an orientation at the International Student Office prior to getting an MIT ID. Orientations are held by appointment. To make an appointment, please call ext. 3-3795, or stop by 5-133.

Lastly, the Card Office does not handle building access issues. Building access privileges are assigned by area gatekeepers. To gain access to CSAIL doors, please contact John Merriman (merriman@csail.mit.edu).
