Does JavaScript have a Future on the Server-Side?
If you listen to Steve Yegge (and he is a smart guy to listen to), then sooner or later we’re all going to end up learning JavaScript. As far as back-end web developers are concerned, this possibility has recently become a little bit more real, with the release of server-side JavaScript hosting frameworks. Both Aptana’s Jaxer and AppJet offer JavaScript-only solutions to web application programming.
While you may or may not be a JavaScript fan, there is something nice about both client and server using the same scripting langauge. At the very least it minimizes the number of languages you need to become an expert in. At most, it might open up new possibilities for load-distribution between client and server. It will be interesting to see how these types of platforms evolve.
Good news for me as I use javascript as a first language with High school students because it fulfils the syllabus requirements such as OOP and doesnt require them to purchase software. If only it had a Hypercard style Gui with drag and drop object duplication.
