The Problem: given a synthetic camera and a set of geometric objects, figure out what's visible.

Whose Problem? Anyone rendering 3-D stuff, and their friends.  (Who else?)

An orthogonal problem to shading, although some rendering systems (OPENGL) shade first and then compute visibility.
