i've created myself a development branch for vis stuff/etc.
this is a private branch:
  - you can look at it if you want, but at your own risk.
  - you should not commit to it without asking me in advance.

as before, you will see me doing branch checkpoints quite
aggressively, and you can safely delete all the emails unless
you specifically care about my internal work (i.e. your name
is either seth or luka).

merges back to mainline will include verbose summaries of all
surviving changes.  these are the what affect the rest of you,
so you probably want at least to skim them.

you can recognize a branch commit (computationally even, hint
hint...), b/c the body will have at least one line of the form:
  Tag: visdev_luka_03-1218_branch
whereas a mainline commit message (including aforementioned
merges) will not contain that line.

  mainline branchtag name: visdev_luka_03-1218_branchtag
  branch name:             visdev_luka_03-1218_branch

not bothering with start tag on branch.  shouldn't be needed.
