William Martin was a pioneer in his thinking about thinking, especially his thinking about how abstraction grounds in the physical world. His thinking was stimulated by his early work on natural-language understanding. The following are two short pieces culled from his unpublished notes by Patrick Winston, and are made available here, in part, to help establish the value of his early work.
